A Collection of Reels, Strathspeys & Jigs
by Pringle, John

Full title: A Collection of Reels, Strathspeys & Jigs with a Bass for the Violoncello or Piano Forte, Dedicated by Permission to the Honorable Miss Elliot by John Pringle

Publisher: Edinburgh

Printer: J Hamilton, No. 24 North Bridge Street

Date: [1800-1801]

Description:

Not all tunes are by Pringle.

Notes:

Although Pringle's first book is for 'violoncello or piano', it is dominated by 'drawing room' piano accompaniments very much in early 19th-century styles, including some fairly sentimental tunes, but some reels have repeated crotchet basslines.
Some basslines have additional small notes for dyads (above or below the large bass note). 'Miss Stuart of Allanbank's Strathspey' has a more complex classically-influenced bassline.

RISM: P5471

Gore: P11

Link: HMT transcription (omits small notes in LH, some dynamics, and there are inconsistencies of beaming and accidentals)

Biographical info: Pringle was a fiddler and composer born c.1770, possibly in the Borders and possibly related to Thomas Pringle, with whom Alexander Campbell had dealings in connection with his Borders trip. This book contains 'Mr. Alexr. Campbell's Strathspey'. Henry Farmer notes in GB-Gu copy of the Second Collection that Pringle was an Edinburgh dancing master. Like many other compilers, Pringle often included other musicians' tunes in his collections, without ascription. (Alburger, 130-31)
