Musick for Allan Ramsay's Collection of Scots Songs
by Stuart, Alexander

Full title: Musick For Allan Ramsay's Collection of Scots Songs. Set by Alexr. Stuart & Engrav'd by R. Cooper

Publisher: Edinburgh: Allan Ramsay

Printer: Printed by Allan Ramsay. Engrav'd by R. Cooper

Date: [1724-6]

Description:

Individual numbers have the additional titlepage 'MUSICK For the Scots Songs in the TEA TABLE MISCELLANY / Part [First] / Inscrib'd to ...' 1) the Right Honourable Countess of Eglintoun; 2) the Right Honourable Lady Somervile; 3) the Honourable Lady Murray of Stanhope; 4) the Honourable Lady Weir; 5) Miss Christian Campbell; 6) Mrs. Young.

Notes:

The basslines are simple, having the appearance of basso continuo but no figures. The basses mostly move in crotchets, with some stepwise runs in quavers. Unadventurous but sensible harmony tends to be described by using notes within the tertial triad; binary harmonic structures are left plain, with no attempt to modulate between the two harmonic centres. Jig basslines tend towards crotchet-quaver but have a variety of treatment within each tune.
John Muir's Wood 1877 MS transcription of the tunes only, with parallel concordances from other sources, is in GB-En MS 3302, available here:
