John Malcolm Bulloch in 'William Marshall, The Scots Composer' (Inverness, 1933) cites Dr Alexander Grant that 'Marshall was not versed in the rules of harmony, and that this part of the work was done for him by the priest at Dufftown, the Rev. George Gordon (1776-1856), a first-rate musician.'
This can not refer to Marshall's A Collection of Strathspey Reels, as Gordon could have been only five years of age on its publication in 1781.
