A Collection of Scots Tunes (Bremner, 4 vol. edition)
by McGibbon, William
Full title: A Collection of Scots Tunes for the Violin or German Flute And a Bass for the Violoncello or Harpsichord by William McGibbon. With some Additions by R: Bremner. Book [ ]
Publisher: London: Bremner
Date: [1762-68]
Description:
Aaron McGregor notes that this edition was advertised in three volumes ‘just re-printed in a neat size for the pocket’ in the Caledonian Mercury of 5 May 1762, with the fourth volume first mentioned there in an advert of 5 December 1768.
GB-Gm M8988 has small corrections compared to the IMSLP copy, and has favourite tunes marked with pencil manicules.
GB-Gm M9026 is a different printing again, with corrections made ('Lively' for 'Livly'), and new errors ('Brish' for 'Brisk') introduced.
[Thanks to Kenneth Gabele for correcting the date of the advertisement for the 4th volume.]
Notes:
Comparing available sources, we find a mixture of different impressions and engravings; this suggests that Bremner had this book in a process of continual revision as plates wore out, and there is no clear chronology of which pages are printed from which plates.

Biographical info: William McGibbon (1696-1756) is believed to have been born in Glasgow. In 1709, he went to London, where he studied with William Corbett, and travelled to Italy with him in 1711. Around 1720, McGibbon settled in Edinburgh, and played in the Edinburgh Musical Society from 1726. He died in Edinburgh. Upon McGibbon's death, his estate was left to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary; they sold Cooper's plates of McGibbon's Scots tune books to Bremner, who published them in Edinburgh and London. Neil Stewart published his editions in Edinburgh 1761-1783, and S. A. & P. Thompson theirs in London, 1779-1794. (Grove)
