A Collection of Strathspeys and Reels together with a Set of Scotch Quadrilles
by Taylor, James

Full title: A Collection of Strathspeys and Reels, together with A Set of Scotch Quadrilles, Composed & Arranged for the Piano Forte, Violin & Violoncello; And Most Respectfully Dedicated By Permission to Mrs Gordon of Kincardine. By Jas. Taylor, Teacher of Music, Fochabers.

Publisher:

Date: [1835?]

Description:

J. Murdoch Henderson noted in pencil the conjectural date of [183-?], and the absence of a watermark in GB-En copy.

Notes:

A collection marred by musical and editorial errors: there are random consecutives, questionable tonal centres, missing key-signatures, wrong time-signatures.
The strathspeys and reels have very simple four-beat basslines, whilst the jigs are mostly crotchet-quaver, and quadrilles have plenty of quavers.

Gore: T1-1

Biographical info: Taylor was a fiddler, composer and music teacher who was born in Elgin, but taught in Fochabers and Banff, then later published A Pastoral Set of Quadrilles as performed by Mr McKenzie's Band (in GB-En), from 36 Union Street, Aberdeen. A contemporary James Taylor also published sacred music in London and Dublin, songs in Norwich and a collection of psalm and hymn tunes in Aberdeen (this last, a teacher of music in Kintore); it is impossible to determine whether any were by the fiddle-tune writing Taylor. Another Elgin violinist, Thomas Taylor, may have been a brother. (Baptie)
